Are cross-country spikes required?

Spikes are encouraged but not required. They are lighter than regular training shoes and can provide better traction on grass, mud, and hills.

A first-year runner can compete successfully without spikes. If purchasing them, make sure the athlete practices in them before race day rather than wearing them for the first time in a meet.
