Does an athlete need more than one pair of training shoes?

No, but rotating two pairs of training shoes can be useful. It gives each pair time to dry and allows the runner to alternate how the shoes feel.

The pairs do not need to serve different technical purposes. Two comfortable daily trainers are perfectly acceptable. More experienced athletes may eventually add a lighter shoe for faster workouts, but that is optional.
